COMPARISON BETWEEN BS 5950 & EUROCODE NO.3

ABSTRACT

Eurocode No. 3 (EC 3) is a new design code for steel structures has been introduced to the European Community & other countries. This dissertation aims is to indetify the differences in design methodology between two codes, EC 3 & BS 5950, as well as their discrepancy on the design output obtained.

In this project, a computer based analysis was used to indetify & compare the significance of several design parameters in the codes.

Two set of studies were done in order to assess the differences in design methodology & results due the slenderness & under different loading condition. The results obtained have shown that EC 3 is generally conservative than BS 5950 although this cannot be assumed in all cases. Discussion & conclusion have been given in the report to give a general view of the economical, complexity & the design output of the codes it may results.
