ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this project is to train students to be more independent in searching for information related to their project and applying the knowledge that they have obtained throughout the course. Student will gain more experience and understand the topic in depth that they have research for the project.

In this project, I will explain on the approach to the design of retaining wall (floodwall) of Sungai Klang. I will select a suitable stretch of river as an illustration for the design of the floodwall. I will also stress on the important criteria that are to be aware of when designing the floodwall.

Basically, the design of the retaining wall can be categorized into 4 main scopes that is:-

Ø        The design factor     -  the topography of the site condition, hydrological data of catchments and other contributing factors.

Ø        Soil analysis    -  study on the soil properties and determining the forces acting on the retaining wall.

Ø        The selection of the retaining wall dimension based on site condition

Ø        The design of reinforcement bars and check on the stability, overturning and sliding of the retaining wall.

Although this project shows the step by step design method of the retaining wall, it is recommended that the reader should have a basic knowledge on soil mechanics and reinforced concrete design. This will allow the reader to understand and follow the overall design procedure of a retaining wall for this project.
