DESIGN A THREE STOREY SHOPHOUSE

ABSTRACT
In this project, the limit state design philosophy is used in designing the structure. British Standard code, BS 8110 for concrete is used mostly in the design of the slabs, beams, columns, foundation and stair. On the other hands, BS6399 is used to determine the dead load and imposed load that are acting on the structure’s elements.
Before I design the structure for the shophouse, first I draw the plan view of the shophouse. The shophouse consists of three storey. The ground floor is designed for the shops, first floor for the office and second floor for the residential purpose. The roof of the shophouse is flat.
Initially I design the slabs on each floor. Before I design the slabs, I have to determine the dead load and imposed load that are acting on slab by referring Table B1 to b4. I design the slabs as solid slab which are continuos and spanning in one direction. For the slab at the terraces, balcony and five foot way, due to different in floor level with the internal slab, I design them as simply supported slab also spanning in one direction.
