STUDY ON FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL (FTP) AND IMPLEMENT WITH RESUME FUNCTION

ABSTRACT

 

            File Transfer Protocol (FTP) allows a person to transfer files between two computers, generally connected via the Internet. If your system has FTP and is connected to Internet, you can access very large amounts of files available on a great number of computer systems. FTP is a powerful tool that enables you to access computers anywhere in the world and copy files from them to your own computer. This process is known as “downloading”. The opposite term to describe the act of making a file available for others to copy is “uploading”. The FTP system based on FTP, a method of inter-computer communication developed for the Internet. FTP offers fast and accurate transfer of large files or collections of files between computers on the Internet. It is based on the client-server model of communication between computers; one computer runs a server program and serving up information to other computer. The other computers run client programs that request information and receive replies from the server. The computer running the server program is an FTP server, also known as an FTP site. The process begins when a connection is made between an FTP client and FTP site. The user is only required to logs on with a user name and password. The username and password identify user’s account on the site. Most public FTP sites are setup with an anonymous account when the user connects to an FTP site over the Internet. This project carries out study on FTP protocol as defined in RFC959. A method will be designed and implemented with the capabilities of resuming interrupted file transfer session based on the method.
