ABSTRACT

A network protocol analyzer is a tool that would capture data packets from the network from the data link layer with the objectives of analyzing each of the data packets captured. This may served as an important tool in network performance monitoring where system administration is able to use this tool to detect network fault area. Besides that, it can also help a student in the study of network protocols where network protocols can be captured in real time and also how a network protocols works. Specialized hardware network protocol analyzer is of too expensive and thus may be out reach by a normal student or even for a network lab. However, with the advancement of Personal Computer Technology, a software network protocol analyzer may work comparatively well as the specialized hardware network protocol analyzer. The objective of this project is to implement a software network protocol analyzer that would run on 32-bit Microsoft Windows platform operating system. The author hopes that through the use of such a protocol analyzer, he can deepen his networking knowledge.
