ABSTRACT
In the last decade people from around the world have been witnessing in data transmission, because of the size of the data to be transmitted is too big and transmission cost is high and expensive. File splitting and merging is the suitable application or tool to solve the problem. For most of the people, they are more familiar with file compression in data transmission. User does not realize the role of file splitting and merging in this aspect. File splitting and merging is the art of science of splitting an information or file into separate files. File splitting is used to split a large file into multiple separate files with smaller size. On the other hand, file merging joins those multiple files back into their original form. During the development of this project, a literature review was done on the file splitting and merging. Besides, a literature review was also done on the structure and file management of the operating system, where the author looks into two platforms, Windows and Linux. Some other splitting system was also reviewed such as Winzip, Microsoft Backup, File Clipper and Splitter 2000.
